If you’re the type of student who…
- Belongs to a Hogwarts House
- Goes beyond (“PLUS ULTRA!”)
- Speaks Klingon or Elvish as a second language
- Finishes all the side quests for 100% completion
- Rolls a natural 20
- Memorizes all the lyrics
- Engages in MARVEL vs. DC debates
…then you might be surprised to hear that Eastern Florida State College offers many opportunities to embrace your fandoms! Here are seven ways to get your geek on at EFSC:
1. Take a Pop Culture-Themed Humanities Class
Did you know that EFSC offers Humanities classes on sci-fi, mythology, superheroes, fairy tales, film, and apocalyptic dystopia? That’s right: You can earn college credit by discussing and learning about your favorite stories and fictional worlds like MARVEL, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter!
If you’re completing your A.A. degree, you’ll need to take at least two Humanities classes as a requirement. Why not take the opportunity to indulge your inner geek and scholar at the same time? Search for “Themes in the Humanities” in our online Class Schedule Search to see what’s being offered next semester.
2. Watch the Events Calendar for Cons, Gaming Days, Superhero Week, and More!
Every year (2020 being the exception), EFSC hosts a variety of events for pop culture enthusiasts. Here are examples of a few from years past:
- Titan Con: A full day of comic, anime, and pop culture panels, interactive sessions with faculty and students, and a cosplay competition.
- Retro Video Game Day: Pwn fellow students on classic versus games from the Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and Xbox with plenty of pizza to munch in-between rounds. (Just watch out for Spiny Blue Shells!)
- National Superhero Week: Visit the Career Center to learn which superheroes from comic books, anime, and film match your Myers Briggs personality type. (Spoiler: If you’re ENTP, you’re Iron Man…and the Joker!)
- Care Fair (Star Wars Theme): The bi-annual EFSC Care Fair features a unique theme each term, and recently it was set in a galaxy far, far away! This event promotes local volunteer opportunities through the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement. (Don’t forget your lightsaber!)
To see other activities and events at EFSC to get your geek on, keep an eye on the EFSC Events Calendar.
3. Check Out Your Local Student Center for Video Games
When you feel like “settling it in Smash,” look no further than your campus’ Student Center. You’re sure to find the perfect title for versus, cooperative, or solo gaming.
The Student Union in Melbourne has an entire area dedicated to video games, but you can typically pick up a controller on whichever campus is closest to you (game titles vary by campus and availability).
- Cocoa: Building 11 (Ralph M. Williams Student Center)
- Melbourne: Building 16 (Student Union)
- Palm Bay: Building 1 (General Titus C. Hall Center)
- Titusville: Building 3 (Student Center/Bookstore)

Whether you’re into tabletop RPGs, console gaming, anime, film, theatre, or literature, there’s a good chance that EFSC has a student club or organization that’s perfect for you! Clubs are more than just a great way to meet other fans or engage in deep discussions about your favorite pop culture stories.
