Congratulations! Being nominated for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is a back-pat-worthy achievement. It signifies either strong academic performance or a penchant for leadership. Joining NSLS means being part of a worldwide effort to create positive change — standing shoulder-to-shoulder with future leaders in government, education, law, pop culture, healthcare, and other spheres of influence.
What Is NSLS?
The NSLS is a life-changing national leadership organization that helps students achieve personal growth and career success while empowering them with a positive outlook on their academic and professional endeavors. The EFSC online club chapter relies on student e-board members to plan networking opportunities that assist with setting and achieving goals. The club also helps students develop soft skills and leadership attributes through teamwork.
How Do I Become Part of NSLS?
You need a 2.75 GPA, have at least six credit hours completed, and be pursuing a degree at EFSC. After meeting these requirements, you’ll receive an invitation to the society. It’s that simple!
Does It Cost Anything To Be in NSLS?
A one-time membership fee of $95 will ultimately pay for itself in scholarships and other perks. Speaking of…

What’s the Best Kept Secret About NSLS?
Most students don’t complete the membership process after they pay the $95 membership fee! As a result, they miss out on the membership and all the perks it brings (while also losing $95).
To become a member, every student completes these four steps to induction:
- Attend an orientation
- Complete the Leadership Training Day
- Attend three Speaker Series events
- Participate in three Small Networking Team (SNT) meetings
Do I Have To Be Active in NSLS After Becoming a Member?
Not at all, but we encourage you to consider it! After all, networking with other students is a great way to learn from others, gain experience for your future, and find peer support. EFSC’s NSLS club is primarily hosted online but with occasional in-person events and meetups. Correspondence is through emails on the NSLS website with online meetings currently held every other week — so be sure to check your NSLS inbox after you join!
What Makes NSLS Different Than Other EFSC Clubs?
If you have any goal — graduating with a degree, opening your own business, improving the environment in your community, running for president, becoming an aerospace engineer — then this club is for you. It’s all about enhancing leadership skills to make your goals achievable.
Case in point: One EFSC student took courses through NSLS and received college credit through EFSC’s LEAP program.
On top of that, NSLS is the largest leadership honors society in the United States, with over 800 chapters and over 2 million members. Having an NSLS membership on your resume sets you apart.
My Personal NSLS Story: Casey L. Covel
I joined NSLS while completing my bachelor’s degree. Unlike other honors societies, NSLS required me to complete certain activities to obtain my membership. This society accepts only those dedicated enough to put in the effort — but fortunately, the requirements were both fun and easy to complete!
I attended a few Speaker Series presentations by influencers and leaders, listening to the life experiences and passions that drove them to achieve their dreams and goals.
I also formed a small “support group” with other inductees called SNT (small networking team) meetings. We met a few times across several weeks, sharing goals we wanted to achieve and encouraging each other to meet those goals — like exercising more often, getting As on upcoming assignments, or beginning the first steps in launching a small business on Etsy.
Lastly, a big orientation day and Leadership Training Day helped me visualize my goals and learn more about myself as a future leader.
Once I completed all the steps, I was formally inducted into the honor society. Because of the leadership skills I demonstrated during the orientation and beyond, I received the Student Networking Team Award and the National Engaged Leader Award. This second award is given to members who go above and beyond the steps for membership:
- Be an inducted member of the society
- Attend an orientation
- Complete the Leadership Training Day
- Attend six Speaker Series events (instead of three)
- Participate in six SNT meetings (instead of three)
- Complete at least five hours of documented community service
It’s commonly said that “you get out of it what you put into it,” but this is especially true of NSLS. The more seriously I took my involvement, the more benefits I received. As a result, I grew professionally, added accolades to my resume, helped encourage others toward their goals, and invested in my community. My biggest advice for future NSLS leaders? Dive in — all the way!
