3 Fun and Productive Things To Do While Attending College Remotely

A hopscotch game drawn in white chalk on asphalt. It serves as a metaphor for productive online learning.

Online learning doesn’t have to feel like a chore, or like you’re settling. There’s plenty you can do to supplement all that time spent at home in fun and productive ways. Here are a few ideas:

Learn a New Language

Why not take this time to do something productive, like learning a new language? Studies show that people who are bilingual may be less likely to have memory problems, which could help when you’re trying to study for an exam. Plus, it looks great on a résumé! There are tons of language-learning apps out there, such as Duolingo, Babbel, and Busuu, that offer both free and paid courses in dozens of languages.

Step Up Your Cooking Game

Many of my friends and family members love to eat out, but with a lot of restaurants being closed or limited to takeout and delivery orders, it’s not always possible to do so right now. That’s why this is the perfect time to improve your cooking skills! As we all know, practice makes perfect — but if you’re truly a beginner, you can always make use of resources like YouTube videos, recipe blogs, or my favorite method: FaceTiming grandma. I highly recommend this YouTube cooking channel that recreates dishes from popular TV shows, movies, and cartoons.

Turn Work Into Play

As kids, my brother and I always hated doing chores, like cleaning up our rooms and doing the dishes. It wasn’t until we made a game out of it that we started to enjoy it. We would pretend we were Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails (I’m showing my age) and run around the room, cleaning up as quickly as we could. Why not create similar games for yourself while completing work for your online classes? Doing so could even help with your time management! For example, challenge yourself to finish a certain amount of reading in a certain amount of time, and if you do, allow yourself to watch an episode of that new Netflix show you’ve been eyeing. You’ll be surprised how much you can get done when you make it competitive!

There you have it: three fun ways to make the most of your time while social distancing and taking online classes. What are you waiting for? One of the best ways to be productive is to dive right in, so get to it!
