Getting involved with student government is common in high school. It’s a very popular extracurricular activity to list on college applications. Did you know that participating in student government can also pay off through increased leadership skills that boost your résumé? It’s true: Joining student government in college has many benefits!

Every college and university has some form of student government organization. At Eastern Florida State College, the collegewide Student Government Association (SGA) ensures that students have a voice on campus. This student-run organization consists of an elected SGA Council that serves the entire study body, as well as four application-based SGA Activity Boards, one per campus.

“Our goal in Student Government is to empower our students and build a strong networking community,” said 2023-24 SGA Council President, Aya Aseid.

“If you want to become a leader and support your peers, I highly encourage you to run for a government position. You will not regret it.”

What Does Each Branch of the SGA Do?

At EFSC, the SGA Council handles funding requests for events, activities, and travel, which student clubs, organizations, individuals, and groups submit.

EFSC’s SGA Activity Boards and Student Ambassadors work alongside the Student Life Coordinator on each campus. Together, they hold campus events and activities that foster student engagement, all while honing their student government leadership skills.

These events provide opportunities for you to gather, network, and enjoy campus activities that enhance your collegiate experience. They also increase social awareness of campus initiatives, student clubs, and monthly themes that bring the community together.

Student Government Leadership Skills Through SGA Participation

“It has been fun getting involved with EFSC and getting an insight into what others want to see and change in the community,” said 2023-24 SGA Secretary Erica Williams.

“I highly recommend joining SGA if you have been considering being a part of EFSC and the opportunities it has to offer!”

Similarly, Steven Kirksey, the 2023-24 SGA Council Parliamentarian, said that his role has allowed him to meet people. He had experiences that he wouldn’t have otherwise had, and made memories and friends he’ll never forget.

“Getting involved in Student Government also helped me become a better student by helping me consider myself part of the college opposed to just being a student going to classes,” Kirksey said.

“I encourage anyone considering, even if you are nervous or unsure, to run for Student Government at EFSC.”

Prospective employers are looking for multi-faceted employees with leadership and teamwork skills that translate into success in the workplace.

“As an EFSC international student and SGA Council member, I have learned many instructive things for my personal and professional life,” said 2023-24 SGA Council Vice President, Sebastian Rueda Sanchez. “I have met great people and friends. This has been an experience that will remain in my heart for the rest of my life.”

EFSC holds SGA elections every spring. If you’re a current EFSC student, consider running or applying for a position — your résumé will thank you!
