Every great legend is surrounded by myths, and while you (probably) won’t find any fire-breathing dragons living at the Career Center, you might have heard some equally fantastical misconceptions. Read on for the top five Career Center myths debunked:

1. I Already Know My Career, So I Don’t Need To Visit the Career Center

Awesome! It’s great you already have a career picked out and are making headway. However, even though it’s called the Career Center, our department does so much more than just helping you choose a career!

Did you know that the Career Center can also help you:

  • Put together a resume or cover letter for a job, internship, college application, or scholarship?
  • Prepare for an interview by identifying and answering common questions, per industry?
  • Research data on specific careers, such as average salary, number of opportunities, etc.?
  • Identify hands-on learning opportunities in your field, such as internships or volunteering?
  • Hone your soft skills, such as professional communication, organization, and time management?
  • Learn more about your personality, interests, skills, and values?
  • Find and apply for jobs — including your first job in a specific field?

If it involves careers, jobs, or internships, the Career Center is your all-in-one stop!

2. I Can’t Afford the Career Center’s Services

Want the best news you’ll hear all-day? The Career Center is a free service to all EFSC students and alumni, meaning you could reach out 30+ years later and still get assistance! The Career Center charges absolutely nothing for its services, including assessments, resumes, and consultations (these same services might cost you big bucks elsewhere!).

Did you know some career services charge up to $200 for a resume? You can get one for free at EFSC’s Career Center!

3. I Graduated Last Year, So I Can’t Use the Career Center Anymore

What’s better than free Career Center services? For-life Career Center services!

That’s right: If you have ever been an enrolled EFSC student (meaning you have a B#), you can return to the Career Center for assistance with writing a resume, hunting for a job, preparing for an interview, and much more! You don’t need your B# to make an appointment; however, having a B# is what makes you eligible for lifelong assistance from the Career Center!

4. I Need Some Career Help, But I Don’t Have Time To Visit the Office

Would you believe that the Career Center isn’t just free and for-life, but also remote-accessible? Many of our resources are available online for you to use without ever having to reach out to your local Career Center Coordinator.

However, you can also meet with your closest Career Center Coordinator over the phone or Microsoft Teams. If it’s difficult to commute to EFSC or you simply don’t have enough time for an in-person meeting, please reach out via email or phone to speak directly with a Career Center Coordinator. All services, including assessments, interview practice, and resume reviews can be conducted remotely!

5. The Career Center Is Going To Judge or Lecture Me About Getting My Life Together, What I’m Wearing, Not Having a Job, etc.

Know what all human beings have in common? We all need help sometimes. Nobody gets through life alone, and that’s especially true at the Career Center. All our Career Center Coordinators have been through college, struggled with job searches, spent hours trying to write their resumes…some even attended EFSC! They know what it’s like to be in your shoes, asking questions like “What do I want to be when I grow up?” or “When are one of my 27 job applications finally going to get me an interview?”

It goes without saying: The Career Center is a judgement-free zone. Don’t be afraid to ask us hard questions or express your concerns about jobs, careers, and internships. Believe me: We’ve heard it all! We’re not your parents, your boss, or your counselors. Our goal is to work with you to help you sort through the questions, identify options, and equip you with everything you need to pursue your goals. Remember: We’re human beings too, each with our own quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. (Read the author bio at the bottom of this post, for example!)

Bonus: I Can’t Use the Career Center Until I’m Admitted To EFSC

If you’re possibly-maybe-sorta-kinda thinking about attending EFSC but aren’t sure what major, career, degree, or trade is right for you, good news: You can get help from the Career Center right now — even before you’re officially admitted to the College! Any prospective student can take our online assessments or speak with a Career Center Coordinator to discuss their questions, concerns, and plans. Our goal is to help you decide what you want to do before you sign up for classes.
